Medicines for Cold Sores

Though the FDA has approved only one over-the-counter cold sore medicine, there are a number of OTC cures for cold sore. These cold sore medications come in various forms including ointments and counter creams, oral tablets and supplements. Basically, the cold sore medicines that are used to heal fever blisters and lip sore belong to the anti-viral group. In addition to healing, these medicines help to reduce the discomfort and pain, which are associated with cold sores.
Topical prescription medicines, which are either creams or ointments, are very good cold sore medication option. These include:
Zovirax ointment: It is an acyclovir ointment that is very helpful for people with a poor immune system.
Zovirax cream: It is also another acyclovir ointment that helps to cure the blisters and lip sore.
Denavir cream: It is a penciclovir useful for preventing the spread of herpes virus as well as for healing the cold sores.
The cold sore cures also includes some oral prescription, such as:
Valtrex
Famvir
Using the cold sore medicine at the initial stage is most helpful to reduce its pain and suffering or even its appearance. You need to keep in mind that these medicines are not approved for use in children. However, the Denavir cream and the Zovirax cream can be used for children beyond 12 years of age.
