The whole truth about cold sore cures

When you have a cold sore you would find many people advising you on the various available cold sore cures. The most common ones that are used are home remedies, over the counter drugs and the prescribed medicines. However, not all are useful for curing cold sores. Read through the article to know more about these remedies and to choose the best one for curing cold sores.

Home remedies

Ice packs, warm tea bags, hot compress with warm damp cloth and using cotton balls soaked in either alcohol or milk are used as remedies for curing cold sores. The other home remedies that are used include applying aloe vera gel, petroleum jelly or garlic oil in the affected area.

Though all these are of help sometimes, it takes time to get cured from cold sores using these natural remedies. Moreover even if the cold sores are healed for the time being by using natural remedies they might occur again as the virus is not always killed effectively.

Over the counter medicines

These medicines are often used by people for getting immediate relief from pain or the other symptoms like fever and muscle aches. The best example is aspirin which is available in the local drugstore and might help in reducing the pain and fever for some time. Some medicines which have moisture can even help to prevent cracking of the sores but then they do not offer permanent relief.

Since the virus herpes complex cannot be easily destroyed by these pain killers therefore they are not of much help

Prescribed medicines

There are topical antiviral creams and tablets available in the markets which are approved by FDA for treating cold sores. Some of these medicines are Danvir which is a cream and is seen to provide good results if applied following the directions. Acyclovir is another drug which is available in both cream and tablet forms but the tablet is mostly used for the children. Other two effective drugs are Famciclovir or Famvir and Valacyclovir or Valtrex. Both of these are available in tablet forms and help in the cure of cold sores.

These are the best ways to combat the cold sores since they help in destroying the virus responsible for causing the disease.
